Gorgeous Grunge: Sex, Drugs & Rock’n’Roll

Wait a moment… what does the title of this blog article even mean?!
Of course, those who grew up in the 90s know bands like Nirvana and understand the meaning of “grunge”. But for all those who didn’t: Read all about it!

About Grunge Music

Grunge (or Seattle Sound) is a subgenre of alternative rock which became widely known with bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the 1990s. Lyrics were often addressing themes such as social alienation and apathy. So they were typically quite reflective and told about different anxieties. Because bands of this genre used a distorted electrical guitar, the sound got slightly “dirty” and added to the gloomy atmosphere. Moreover, the singing style was similar to the guitar in tone and delivery: Kurt Cobain, for example, used a “gruff, slurred articulation and gritty timbre”. While Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam made use of a “wide, powerful vibrato” to show his “depth of expression” (Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Music of the World, Volume 8).

The idea behind the photo shooting

In case you read everything, you’ve probably already sensed it: Exactly, this photo shooting was done in memory of Kurt Cobain. The singer of Nirvana killed himself with a shotgun at the age of 27. But it also should serve as a  warning: Don’t get addicted to drugs, alcohol or cigarettes! Life is too short!

By the way: Considering that Kurt Cobain suffered not only from drug addiction but also from depression, the weather was very fitting: It rained…

If you look closer, you can even see the rain drops on two of the pictures!
